What is Toxic Load, Why does it matter and How do you reduce it?

Toxins are one of the primary drivers of disease as documented by Dr Joseph Pizzorno who has correlated 26 toxins and toxins classes, 24 chronic disease and 18 cancers. Now I don’t need to say this again but toxins deteriorate our health and most of us don’t even realise we are eating them, putting them on our skin or inhaling them. So this is where toxic load comes in and why you should monitor it!

What is toxic load?

Toxic Load = the total amount of toxic stressor in your body at one time.

Our environment is now so toxic compared to the generations before us, basically we are living in a toxic soup which our bodies have never faced before. It is an accumulation of all the things we are exposed to on a daily basis.

What contributes to your toxic load:

  • Allergies

  • Poor diet

  • Alcohol

  • Food addictives

  • Un-filtered Water

  • Air pollution

  • Food packaging materials

  • House and garden chemicals

  • Fragrances

  • Cosmetics

  • Plastics

  • Medications

  • Narcotics

  • Heavy metals

  • Bacteria, fungus, yeast

  • Poorly detoxified hormones

  • Chronic stress

  • Stimulants

  • Non-organic food

  • Unsolved emotional pain

  • Internal by-products

Over the years, toxins fill your bucket, until one day the bucket overflows and a cascade of health problems may ensue, including leaky gut, chronic inflammation, autoimmune conditions, cancer and dementia.

When we drink more alcohol and eat more sugar, we will end up using our nutrient reserves to process these. This means certain nutrients are not as available for other important roles in the body such as healing, healthy energy, mood and immunity.

The adverse effect of toxins on human health is real. And the more you know about this, the earlier you can do something about it, and the better you will be at an older age.

How do you know when you tolerance has been reached of toxins?

It will tell you! It shows up in your body as symptoms because your body is out of balance!

Symptoms of toxic load:

  • Energy problems: profound fatigue, lethargy

  • Sleep troubles

  • Digestive problems: This is where decaying food is not eliminated properly and sits in the gut causing toxicity. This is then re-absorbed into the bloodstream and can cause symptoms such as headaches, bloating, constipation, gas, diarrhoea, fatigue, confusion, coated tongue, insomnia.

  • Aches and pains: headaches, muscle aches, joint pain

  • Sinus problems: chronic post-nasal drip, congestion

  • Mental issues: depression, brain fog, trouble concentrating

  • Malnutrition & pre-mature ageing: Nutrients are not efficiently delivered to the cellular level resulting in sub-functioning cells and the appearance of premature ageing.

  • Emotional changes and reduced cognitive function including poor memory, brain fog, mild depression, low libido, loss of motivation and irritability.

  • Neurological problems: dizziness, tremors

  • Weight problems: unexplained weight gain or weight-loss resistance

  • Skin problems: rashes, eczema, psoriasis, acne

  • Hormonal issues

  • High or low blood pressure

Your liver detoxes your body by sending toxins to your gut to be eliminated, but, if your liver isn’t healthy you struggle to detoxify. Also, if you have an unhealthy gut it means toxins will recirculate through your body depleting you of vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. Basically, creating a vicious cycle.

The vitamins and minerals we obtain from our diet are co-factors required for numerous chemical processes that occur in the liver to breakdown toxins. Without them, the detoxification process can be impaired making us more toxic.

How to decrease your toxic load?

Well that’s simple - detoxification and no I’m not talking about a simple juice detox or detox teas sold on Instagram. A true naturopathic detoxification that has been used as a healing modality for many centuries. This type of detoxification at a tissue level takes time! Because if you think about it you have been accumulating toxins since you were born.

First, improve elimination pathways to make sure they are open so when you detox out the toxins they can leave the body rather than be reabsorbed. This includes your liver, your gut and your skin / lymphatic system.

Secondly, you need to give your body nutrients to counteract the negative effect of toxins! Pack your diet full of healthy antioxidants, quality proteins and healthy fats. When your body is in a toxic mode or our of balance it needs to be flooded with nutrients to repair itself. Yes your body can repair itself, it has literally been doing it all your life. Every broken a bone? They put it in a cast and your body heals it, not the doctors, not medication – you! Don’t forget this.

Thirdly, clean up your house and your beauty products. Unless you are buying organic products, there is a big possibility that your cleaning products, make up, skin care, pots and pans all have toxins in them. Be aware of what you are putting on your body.
